Liquid gases are used in thousands of homes throughout Ireland, efficiently providing central heating, mobile heating, hot water, cooking, gas cookers and gas fires.

Liquid gas and renewable liquid gasses provide an energy solution for rural areas in Ireland without access to the natural gas grid. Liquid gasses provides urban householders with gas solutions for outdoor living and cooking, and can used to generate power, clean and dry clothes, mow the lawn and wash the car.

The role of liquid gas in reducing carbon emissions in home heating

Heat pump technology will play an important role in reducing emissions from Ireland’s housing stock. However, while heat pumps work well in many settings, the SEAI National Heat Study reported that nearly a fifth of homes in Ireland would remain unsuitable even with all practical energy efficiency upgrades. Because of this,  a wider suite of options is urgently required to accelerate the decarbonisation of Irish homes.

According to the Census 2022 results, 46% of all Irish households are still reliant on high carbon fuels including oil, peat, and coal for heating. A large majority of these households are located outside our major urban centres, in areas off the natural gas grid and in older building stock. In many circumstances, switching to a heat pump system is not logistically viable or is prohibitively expensive, leaving homeowners with limited alternative options to reduce carbon emissions from their heating system.

To support these communities, LGI advocates for a ‘mixed technology’ approach that supports the use of liquid gases through the installation of renewable ready gas boilers, as well as heat pump technology.

The average age of Ireland’s housing stock presents another challenge to achieving the Government’s retrofitting targets, with 65% of all houses built before 2001 according to Census 2022. This equates to just over 1.2 million homes, which are typically less energy efficient and more costly to heat.

For a heat pump system to work efficiently in many older properties, there is a high probability that a deep retrofit of the building will be required.
