Home Heating

Liquid gas is already used in thousands of homes throughout Ireland, efficiently providing central heating, mobile heating, hot water, cooking, gas cookers and gas fires.

Liquid gas and renewable liquid gasses such as BioLPG provide an energy solution for rural areas in Ireland without access to the natural gas grid. LPG also provides urban householders with gas solutions for outdoor living and cooking, and can used to generate power, clean and dry clothes, mow the lawn and wash the car.

The role of liquid gas in decarbonising home heating

Heat pump technology will play an important role in decarbonising Ireland’s housing stock. However, while heat pumps work well in many settings, nearly a fifth of homes in Ireland would remain unsuitable even with all practical energy efficiency upgrades. Because of this,  a wider suite of options is urgently required to accelerate the decarbonisation of Irish homes.

According to the Census 2022 results, 46% of all Irish households are still reliant on high carbon fuels including oil, peat, and coal for heating. A large majority of these households are located outside our major urban centres, in areas off the natural gas grid and in older building stock. In many circumstances, switching to a heat pump system is not logistically viable or is prohibitively expensive, leaving homeowners with limited alternative options to decarbonise their heating system.

To support these communities in decarbonisation, LGI advocates for a ‘mixed technology’ approach that supports the use of lower carbon liquid gases through the installation of renewable ready gas boilers, as well as heat pump technology.

Key Benefits of LGP In Your Home

When it comes to environmental performance and cost, LPG offers a superior solution to homes beyond the natural gas network:

Technological advances that are driving energy efficiency in the gas appliance sector

The operational performance that can be achieved using LPG are improving all the time.

Fuel is secure

Removing the constant worry for rural householders may have due to oil thefts. With LPG storage tanks your fuel supply is safe.

Helps reduce your carbon footprint

LPG emits 33% less carbon-dioxide than coal and 11% less than heating oil.

BioLPG delivers the same benefits as LPG

In addition it is a renewable fuel andrbon saving are increased to a minimum 50% up to 90%.

Lower carbon LPG, renewable BioLPG and rDME offer significant reductions in carbon emissions when compared to oil, peat, and coal. Renewable BioLPG has the capacity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions up to 90% against the set values of fossil fuels, in accordance with the European Union Renewable Energy Directive.

The average age of Ireland’s housing stock presents another challenge to achieving the Government’s retrofitting targets, with 65% of all houses built before 2001. This equates to just over 1.2 million homes, which are typically less energy efficient and more costly to heat.

For a heat pump system to work efficiently in these older properties, there is a high probability that a deep retrofit of the building will be required.

Easy to Install

Supplied Anywhere

LPG can be supplied anywhere in Ireland with safety in mind. Through your own storage tanks or cylinder supply.

Range of boilers

There are a range of central heating boiler designs available. For example a combination LPG boiler provides heat and hot water on demand, removing the need for an expensive storage system.

Remote Monitoring

Remote monitoring of the storage tanks: Can ensure that supplies are topped up when needed, giving householders reassurance that they will always have access to fuel for heat and hot water.

Compatible

LPG is compatible with most modern low carbon heating appliances: Such as gas heat pumps, hybrid installations and fuel-cell micro-CHPs.

Future Proof

Using LPG today will future proof your home: As BioLPG is a ‘drop-in’ fuel, LPG infrastructure is ready, meaning no additional equipment costs.
